Incubator Materials
PLEASE NOTE: as this is the first Bill of Materials of the Academy take note of the following:
- The components on this list are the bare minimum you need to build an incubator and compatible with the incubator 3D design, Fritzing wiring and Arduino code. Please feel free to deviate from this list and change the design accordingly. Once the classes started we will keep track of your hacks on your own documentation site.
- The suppliers all ship to addresses in The Netherlands, and some also ship abroad. Alternative sources are listed on the Suppliers page. Whenever you find a suitable alternative, please post it in the comments at the bottom of the page.
- Check the stock level and shipping times of each component before ordering. If it takes more than two weeks, look for an alternative.
- Some suppliers, such as Farnell, only ship to businesses by default. Contact their service department to order as an individual.
Bill of Materials
Needless to say, you will need an Arduino UNO or equivalent microcontroller. Most likely you have already bought one, as part of the general preparations.
Must have
These are the parts you will need to assemble the incubator:
# | Amount | Description | Supplier NL | Cost |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 4 | 3mm MDF 95 x 45 cm | Local wood store, like Houthandel Schmidt | 5.00 |
2 | 1 | Expanded polystyrene (EPS) | Praxis | 7.99 |
4 | 1 | 3mm Acrylic sheet 27 x 41 cm | Plexiglas.nl | 3.50 |
5 | 1 | 12V 80 mm Axial Fan | EOO, Farnell | 8.99 |
6 | 1 | Power switch | EOO, iPrototype | 0.95 |
7 | 1 | Water proof temperature sensor (*1) | HobbyElectronica, iPrototype | 2.95 |
8 | 1 | 4 section 7 segment display | EOO, iPrototype | 1.95 |
9 | 1 | MOSFET | Farnell, EOO | 0.98 |
10 | 4 | 10K resistor | Farnell, EOO | 0.06 |

14 | 1 | 220 Ohm resistor | iPrototype, EOO | 0.45 |
15 | 1 | 7.5 W power supply | iPrototype, EOO | 13.95 |
16 | 1 | Jack Adapter | iPrototype, EOO | 0.85 |
17 | 1 | Relay | Sparkfun, Floris.cc | 9.00 |
18 | 1 | 100W infrared light bulb | LampDirect | 8.99 |
19 | 1 | Lamp fitting | Gamma | 2.19 |
20 | 1 | Power cord | Gamma | 8.29 |
21 | 1 | Power plug | Gamma | 1.09 |
Total costs | 79.17 |
(*1) In case you choose for the DS18B20 temperature sensor, you will also need a 4.7K ohm resistor
Alternatives
- When it comes to the building materials, such as wood, plastic and EPS it’s cheaper to buy in bulk with some fellow students and chop it into pieces. The cost in this overview is already corrected for that somewhat. Also resistors and LEDs are cheaper in bulk.
- Instead of Arduino UNO you could permanently build in an Arduino Mini Antratrek EUR 9.56 or something even simpler. We’ll go into that later during this Academy, so don’t glue your Arduino to the incubator!
Nice to have
# | Description | Supplier NL | Cost |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Lever switch | iPrototype | 1.99 |
2 | Speaker | iPrototype | 1.55 |
Total costs | 3.54 |
